The National School Counseling Week will be celebrated during the first week of February. It is common to hear discussions on how class size and teacher quality affects the quality of education. Rarely do we hear how school counselors enable students to become better students and empower them to surpass their fears and enrich them so that they may pick a career that matches their wants and desires. Cory Notestein of Alamosa High School in Alamosa, Colorado was named the 2015 Counselor of the Year. High on his list is the fact that almost 90% of his students graduate and over 80% of the students of seniors graduate with three or more college credits. “The more I learned about our school counselors, the more I realized that often, America’s school counselors are truly the deciding factor in whether our young people attend college or not,” Obama said.
